Timber Protection

Wood science is the study of wood as a material that is renewable and of biological origin. In other words, the term wood science can also be known as wood technology. To be able to study wood it has to be compared to other products. Materials properties, ease of it being worked on and its value are among the few properties which are compared against those of wood and other materials. The utilization of technology gives wood an upper hand in most of this comparison. Some of these advantages include wood being a versatile material that can be used in a wide range of products. Once a tree has been cut down another can be planted in the same spot. Timber can be utilized in very many applications, and this makes it more valuable.

For your wooden products and house to stay for long and have a good appearance it needs to be protected. Wooden structures have to be kept away from water and pests that eat through the wood. The water particles in the timber increase the rotting and the insects bore through the wood. Many methods are available in the treatment of wood one of the most common being the ACQ – alkaline copper Quaternary. This is a copper-based preservative that is applied to the wood for protection. As effective as this preservative, it has some downside to its use. It has been seen corroding most metals for example aluminum in less than six months of its application. The saturation level of any treatment will depend on where the wood is going to be used and the species of the wood. Timber being used around a water body will be dipped in a more saturated fluid than that being used above ground.

Another wood treating method that is fast being accepted is the use of copper metal. The use of this method is fast being accepted because it is not corroding the metal fasteners. An alternative name to be given to this method is the micronized copper wood preservative method. The copper metal is applied to the wood as small microscopic particles injected into the wood at high pressure. The difference between this method and the other copper-based methods is that the copper is used as a metal rather than a dissolved material. The characteristics of the wood are highly improved and the when this process is used to treat wood. The timber treated in this way is used in both outdoor and indoor frames that last very long.

Termites and fungal decay are just a few among the many problems wood treated from this method are protected against. It has also shown to be an improvement in corrosion resistant properties to metal fasteners. When you use this method to treat wood, then you will not need to worry for at least ten years.
